Meet the Ma Maison Ladies

When I first moved to Austin this past November, I had the pleasure of visiting Ma Maison in Dripping Springs. Ma Maison is a wedding and event venue that “combines the warmth of home with breathtaking European-inspired elegance.” Located in Texas Hill Country, this venue has it all! Not only a beautiful indoor space, but gorgeous outdoor scenes with spectacular views! I mean, who wouldn’t want to be married on their grounds? Especially with their newest addition: their chapel!

The Team

As much as I can go on and on about Ma Maison, this blog post is about the team. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with all of them recently on a team-branding session. Although I had previously met a couple of the ladies previously (Amy during my venue tour and I had spoken to Conor on social media), this was my first time really meeting and getting to know the entire team!

The Ma Maison ladies are not only make all wedding dreams come true at their venue, but they’re beautiful, fun, and sweet. They all get along wonderfully … so much so, you’d think they were one big, happy family. And in many ways, are!

Below are little things to know about each one of them; however, don’t take my word for it. Go out there! View the venue and meet the ladies yourself!

Karen (and Ellie, of course!)

Meet the owner and ‘ma’ of Ma Maison. With a warm smile and a generous heart, she is the planner and designer of this gorgeous venue. After 30+ years of event planning and assisting, she decided to go on a journey of building her own wedding and event space. One that is “a beautiful Texas Hill Country wedding venue that is rustic—but not rusty.”

“Ma Maison, French for ‘my house,’ was conceived playing on the family’s strong French heritage and a sense of warm and inviting southern hospitality.” She wants to make all of her guests feel as though Ma Maison is their home.

As Karen puts it, “I see each wedding as unique and special as the wedding of one of my daughters.”

As for Ellie, Karen’s cute fluffy fur-baby: she is always ready to greet you when you come for a tour. She is by far the best tour guide around. Ellie has the most contagious smile and the softest fur! “If you ever feel stressed about planning your big day or are nervous to walk down the aisle, she will step in and cover you in the best pup snuggles ever.”

Michelle

Originally from Louisiana, this lovely lady has been with Ma Maison since almost the very beginning. She’s the site manager and knows all the ins and outs of the venue. “From welcoming you on your big day to helping you clean up when it’s all done, Michelle is the gal you want by your side!” When she’s not busy onsite, she’s going on adventures with her husband and furbaby, Breaux (who is the cutest!!)!

Conor

Here is the outgoing and personable lady behind all of Ma Maison‘s social media posts. A Ma Maison bride herself, she can “give you all the information and tips on what it’s like at the venue.” An Austin native, she can often be found spending quality time and/or swimming with her husband and children.

Amy

A true Texan who comes from a family full of event planners, Amy “has helped bring dozens of fabulous weddings come to life!” She was my tour guide when I arrived on property for the first time and was greeted with a warm smile and welcoming arms. Expect nothing less when you come by. When she’s not helping bring wedding dreams come true, she’s enjoying the newly-wed life with her husband, son, and furbaby!

Kelli and James’ Sekrit Theater Engagement Session

If this Sekrit Theater engagement session is any indication of how Kelli and James’ wedding day will be, I know it’ll be epic perfection! Not only was it a fun photoshoot, but their love for each other is so natural and radiates! But I got ahead of myself …

From the Beginning

During our initial phone consultation, I knew I had to work with this couple! I was in the car, on my way to Dallas when we spoke. They were in the car on their way to go hiking. If you know me, I’m an active person who loves to hike, kayak, and explore. So right off the bat, it was an instant connection!

After being referred to me by Eclipse Event Co. (thank you SO much, Amy!), they checked out my website. They had “looked at many different photographers, and felt an emotional connection” to my photos. They said, “We caught ourselves smiling and feeling emotions when looking through your portfolio. Some photographers know when to capture the moment, and you definitely do!” Can I just say, YESSSSSSSSSS!! This is what I aim to do: capture the authentic, real, and true emotions and personalities of people.

And now I get to document their love, emotions, and celebration in April 2022.

Kelli and James

I love getting to know my couples before their engagement session and wedding day. What I find out helps me to best represent who they are as individuals and as a couple.

What I found out is:

• That they make it a point to eat dinner together every night, and do Martini Fridays to celebrate their weekly accomplishments. **Btw, I love this!!!**

• They love their cat, Bijou, who follows James around and whom I hope to meet in the near future, as I’m a crazy cat lady!

• They love to hike and kayak, but also love lazy days on the couch with a good book or television show.

And that I cannot wait to get to know them better and hopefully tag along on some of their hiking or kayaking adventures! Not to mention, celebrate their wedding day with them!!!

Sekrit Theater Engagement Session

After finding out that this couple is energetic and adventurous, yet chill and easy-going, it made sense that they wanted a Sekrit Theater engagement session. This Austin venue is eclectic, charming, a hidden gem! There are a plethora of backdrops that are not only beautiful, but fun and different!

As we began walking around, we kept finding fun little spots for photo opps. Starting with the Greenhouse:

Walking into the Sekrit Theater is magical.
Being in the greenhouse makes you want to dance!
I love all the different angles you can utilize at the Sekrit Theater.
Kelli and James are a beautiful pair!
They wanted a lot of emotion to exude from their photos ...I think we got it!
Sneaking in a candid ring shot!
Could they love each other any more?! The answer is no ... their love is pure!
Cats living among the Sekrit theater grounds makes me and my couples super happy!
Did I mention there are a few cats living among the Sekrit Theater grounds? And they were so sweet and loving … so much so that Kelli and James couldn’t refuse giving some love!

The couple did a few cute hip bumps, which got them to laugh with and at each other.
The greenhouse is pretty no matter where we shoot!
Another candid ring shot, because why not?!
The bus is definitely a unique and interest photo spot.
The Lounge Bus was fun and unique … and Kelli finally got to experience riding a school bus for the first time!
The random piano at the Sekrit Theater ... and no, it doesn't actually play haha!
The random piano that they couldn’t resist playing, although no sound came out!
I love how this couple was down for anything ... including James, who is pretty tall, to squeeze into it!
I love that Kelli and James were down for anything, including James fitting into a tiny little house!
The I love you to the moon and back graffiti
Is it Austin if you don’t have a mural?!

During their outfit change, I made sure to sneak in a ring shot:

James had this ring custom made for Kelli.
This beautiful ring was custom designed by James!
After an outfit change, we decided to go back to the greenhouse.
After their outfit change, we headed back to the Green House.
Since they're an active couple, I worked them out by having them run and do piggy back rides.
Because they’re an active couple, I definitely wanted to do some action shots, like running and piggyback rides!
Super cute shot of Kelli and James laughing.
Running through the greenhouse!
I couldn't resist this shot as the backdrop is gorgeous!
The Sekrit Theater is probably one of my favorite places to photograph.

Kelli never had to ride the bus growing up so it was cool that she got to experience this!
A little PDA never hurt anyone.
This cool vintage Ford truck was the best way to end our session.
I love the vintage Ford truck!!!
It was a must-see for Kelli!
I love their casual wear and using the Ford truck as a prop.

South Congress Hotel Wedding: Sara and Ryan

Located in the center of Austin, Texas, this South Congress Hotel wedding was anything but traditional … it was perfect! Although I was not the primary photographer for this wedding, I had the pleasure of being Photos by MKay‘s second shooter. I met Amanda, owner of Photos by Mkay, at an open house and we instantly clicked. When she inquired about me possibly helping out on some weddings, I was excited and eager to do it!

I know a lot of primary photographers don’t second shoot; however, I thoroughly enjoying helping my fellow photographers out from time to time. Especially when I’m new to an area and not booked on the date. It not gives me the opportunity to meet photographers/friends. Plus, it allows me to see venues on an actual wedding day. In addition, being a second photographer gives me the flexibility to provide a different, more artistic perspective.

The Lovely Couple

Sara and Ryan originally met while in college. While their lives caused them to have a long-distance relationship for a while, they made it back to each other. They have been inseparable ever since, moving from state-to-state before settling down in Austin.

When planning their wedding, they knew Austin was it for them! Austin is near and dear to their hearts. Because of this, the couple chose to have a South Congress hotel wedding, being a venue directly in the center of Austin, and a place where their guests can stay.

**All photos seen below and on this blog post are my own, photographed for Photos by MKay and her bride and groom, with permission to edit and use for my own**

I loved Sara's shoes. White Keds to go with her untraditional, modern wedding!
Flat lays are a new trend that every couple wants to include on their wedding day. This is a great way to show off your jewelry, stationery, flowers, and anything that's important to you.
Sara's dress was very bohemian.

Aren't they the sweetest couple?

Austin Wedding Planner: Kelsie of the Groovy Wedding Co.

Meet the sweet and talented Austin wedding planner, Kelsie, owner of the Groovy Wedding Co. Anyone who has the pleasure of knowing or working with her instantly feels like they’ve met a longtime friend.

Originally from Kansas, she moved to Austin in June 2020, in the middle of the pandemic. “I visited Austin for the first time about five years ago and I immediately knew I had to live here one day. I just love the drive this city has. The weather/nature was also a huge part of moving here. When I’m not working, you can find me outdoors!”

With both of us being relatively new to the Austin area, we quickly connected. It’s been so nice being able to relate to someone who isn’t an Austin native, and who is trying to become familiar with the wedding industry! Not to mention, we both know the struggles of starting a business amidst a pandemic!

We started off chatting about business, but quickly got to seeing wedding venues together and planning a styled shoot. Because we are very similar in personalities, it has been such a fun partnership!

Kelsie and Her Journey

What made this Austin wedding planner take the big step in starting her own business? That credit goes to Jack, Kelsie’s boyfriend. “He has worked for himself since he graduated college. He was the one who really pushed me to go out on a limb and start this beautiful journey of becoming a business owner. I’ve had a long streak of horrible bosses that have made me never want to have another boss again. I also absolutely love the wedding industry and it was either get a job at a venue that was about an hour away or start The Groovy Wedding Co.

And with her experience, she’s seen it all and still loves event planning. “I’ve been in the event industry for about five years now and have never looked back! My first job was as a wedding and event planner’s assistant. Second gig was an event planner at a small outdoor venue. And my last job before launching my business was working at a nationally recognized venue in Kansas City. This job gave me so much experience. It taught me skills and forced me to face the challenges that I needed in order to blossom in the wedding industry. Our venue was not like any other wedding or event venue. We had five different spaces within the building itself. This meant sometimes managing three weddings at once or having a wedding while Lana Del Ray was down in the Main Theater with over 1,400 attendees. Talk about multi-tasking!!”

All About the Groovy Wedding Co.

What is Kelsie’s favorite part of being a planner? “There are a lot lol! If I had to narrow it down, it would be helping my clients. I LOVE taking stress off of their plates and making the wedding planning process as smoothly as possible for them.

What makes her stand out from other planners is that she’s laid-back. “I don’t think I am like a lot of other planners in the sense of the fun, laid-back approach I take. My company is built upon the foundation of accepting everyone is what I take most pride in. Love is such a beautiful bond to experience, we should not discriminate against those that are lucky enough to find it.”

And you already know my stance on hiring a wedding planner but why does Kelsie think a wedding planner is so important (aside from the fact that she is one, of course)? Because they’ll make a friend during the process! Yes, wedding planning can be stressful but it should be fun. After all, it is about celebrating the love two people share!!”

Branding Session

What do business cards, websites, and social media have in common? They’re all a representation of who you and your business are. You want to be seen as you are. Branding sessions are a great way to attract your ideal clients by making them fall in love with your authentic self and brand. Not to mention, your photos can impact your clients’ entire experience when they land on your site!

Because of the reasons above, branding is such a crucial part of any small business. So of course, we got to work on planning her branding session!

As part of this session, we wanted to show her close relationship with her boyfriend of two years and fur-babies, while also focusing on allowing her personality to shine! I might be a bit biased but I believe we succeeded! As you’ll see below, this Austin wedding planner is not only laidback, but she’s easy-going, fun, and always has a smile on her face (whether she’s hanging with her loves or drinking a cold cider and answering emails on her phone).

Austin Family Session: Gillis Family

Like any move, our move to Texas was chaotic. However, our realtor helped us make the transition more smooth, thank goodness! That’s when our friendship with Brandi, our realtor and lifesaver, blossomed. During the search for homes, she found out that I was a photographer. She mentioned that she was in need of an Austin family session since they have never had their family photos taken! So our planning began …

Location

It’s all about location, location, location. This is important because I want to make sure we bring your vision to life. If you want urban, rustic/country, or traditional … we have to find the perfect spot to give you that look. What do you want to see displayed in your home?

Not to mention, I always recommend choosing a location that is a good representation of your personalities, and where you feel most comfortable. It could be a spot where you and your family often go, or somewhere you’ve always wanted to explore.

For Brandi and her family, they love to hike. River Place Nature Trail is one of the locations they love to walk as a family. And there we have it: Our location!

Austin Family Session

Brandi and I went back and forth quite a bit. She has one son who lives in North Carolina, while her other two live with her in Austin. As much as we wanted to include him, there were some difficulties in getting him here in time. But no worries! We are planning a family session part II in the near future.

And although her oldest son couldn’t make it, Brandi’s husband’s parents were in town so we were able to include them in some photos. What a great opportunity to include the parents/grandparents family session!

This Austin realtor's family was the cutest ... and they're definitely mommy's boys!
I love including grandparents in my family sessions!
This Austin family is just the cutest and their love for one another shines!
You can never have enough family photos in any Austin family session.
Isn't Brandi and her husband such an attractive couple?
I love Austin, Texas. It provides so many beautiful backdrops for any Austin family session.
Just some family fun!
Family photos are so important, especially because kids grow up so fast!
This realtor has some beautiful boys!! And so well-behaved.
You know I love walking shots for any Austin family session!
The boys had so much energy so I had them run back and forth to capture some of their personalities, and to get some of that energy out!
Such a beautiful family!
Nearing the end of our Austin family session and we couldn't have asked for better weather or scenery!
Have I mentioned that Brandi is an awesome realtor and has the most beautiful family?
And that's a wrap for this Austin family!

Book a Session (don’t wait)!

I truly believe that updating your family photos is so important. Especially if you have kids because kids grow up so fast!!

In need of an Austin family session? I’d love to chat with you about details and how we can create everlasting and fun memories together!
